I am so used to the sambar powder I carry back every time I visit my hometown down South. But I realised one fine morning that I had barely any left.
My neighbourhood Kirana store did not have any stock of homemade sambar powder and I wasn’t ready to compromise on any of the branded stuff.
It was raining cats and dogs outside….you know how the monsoons in Mumbai are.
But when a friend told me “Annapoorneswari Stores, Matunga”, near the kochu guruvayoor temple at the other end of the road “, and added, there’s lot more there”, I took a call and the car and after a quick namaste at the kochu Guruvayur temple and down the street I went straight upto the station not realising I had missed the landmark.
Then a U turn and I found the store just next to the vegetable and flower vendors and kabutarkhana, no doubt I had missed it. It was not too big.
And what did I carry back home??
Not just sambar and rasam powder, but fryums, jackfruit, sweet and salty banana chips, jaggery, palm sugar, rock candy, mouthwatering pickles and ground masalas, papads, ghee, Dahiwala chillis, dried lotus stems, millet, idiappam varieties, and all that reminded me of down South.
Rounding off my purchase with two packets of the irresistible Mahali root curd pickle, I promised that I would be back soon. There was much more to try..the list was endless.
A visit to Annapoorneswari stores – an absolute delight for foodies.
